It is a very good lens, and if you can live without IS
it's a very good buy.  But I've owned several IS
lenses, don't baby my equipment, and have had no
problems at all.  Nor have I heard of any problems
with IS fragility on this or other internet resources.
 I can't help buy wonder if the sales guy had plenty
of the older lenses in stock, but none of the IS versions.
