I did that, just once, because we have a loading dock at work and the item was
heavy enough that the shipping was cheaper if it was shipped to an address that
didn't require a lift plate. It arrived at a time when I wasn't at work. The
shipping clerk signed for it even though it had obviously suffered gross
damage, without noting the damage when she signed. Fortunately for me it
worked out in the end, thanks to above-and-beyond service from the company I
purchased from.

I pick up at the depot. My housemate leaves a one-off signature on the door
for FedEx (before their first delivery attempt) if he doesn't expect to be
around at delivery time.
