Hey There!

I'm shooting with EOS 1D and D60 bodies and I've been testing and using
Cap1, Breeze Browser 2.7 and YARC+ 2.2 for a bit now. Mostly I was trying
to figure out which one to use for RAW conversions and what they are all
capable of. I've also been using Canon's own FileViewer 1.2 Utility and
Canon RAW Image Converter 2.0 programs.

Cap1 is the best in terms of what you can get out of a RAW file hands down.
It can usually squeeze the most out of images if they are off in terms of
exposure and contrast. As far as the actual image quality on OUTPUT, Cap1
vs. YARC+ or BB I'd rate YARC+ as comparable or maybe slightly behind Cap1
but this is only on my very sharp (literally, perfectly aligned!), color
calibrated monitor with the study images blown up to huge single pixel
levels. On paper the differences are just not apparent when output on a
Frontier. BB is farther behind and is clearly not as good as Cap1 or YARC+
at doing RAW conversions. BUT BB has the best image sorting capabilities
and is VERY fast at producing thumbs for sorting and has good renaming
capabilities. As a file manager it is the best of the named utilities.
Canon's RAW converters are not worth using if you want to get the best
images out of your RAW files. And after all you MUST want to get good
images because you chose to shoot RAW.

On my EOS 1D and EOS D60 images of people, motor sports and landscapes used
for my testing when output on a Frontier and Noritsu printer the Cap1 images
were indistinguishable from YARC+ with BB's images looking slightly less
good but still excellent. I used PS 7.01 for editing (and FM's actions in
one series of tests), and output both native image size and 2X sized images
using Fred Miranda's SI (stair step interpolation), action for PS to produce
the 2X images.

For MY money I bought YARC+ AND BB for their strengths and used the $400 I
saved to buy a couple more CF cards and put the reserve into my PS 8.0
account. Cap1 is simply too expensive a tool, for someone else who sells a
LOT of custom edited images and can justify the high cost (and short life
that Cap1 will likely have with ARC in the wings), Cap1 may be the best
tool. I've not used Adobe ARC yet but expect that when PS 8.0 is released
with ARC I will probably use it for RAW conversion based on the reports that
it has received.

Just my .02.

Cheers/Chip
