Canon's RAW converters are not worth using if you want to get the best images out of your RAW files. And after all you MUST want to get good images because you chose to shoot RAW.

Are your lack of CANON results the same with the LINEAR RAW conversion as with the standard conversion? I am assuming you aren't as the Linear leaves it all to you and your Photoshop. I have read recently that linear conversion is really the only way to go if you want absolute control. Otherwise we are leaving it up to Canon, Capt1, BB, or Y, and I'm not disputing your results there.
