I have an old 300mm f/4L (non-IS) lens. I am not the original owner, but I bought it from the original owner, who told me everything was original to the lens.
For the last several months, I have been having problems with the lining of the tripod collar -- it's been degenerating so that the lens doesn't rotate smoothly inside the collar any more. I found and bought a cheap replacement tripod collar on eBay as a stop-gap until I find a better solution, but the "stuff" from the old lens that is sticking to the barrel of the lens keeps the lens from rotating inside it. The "stuff" from the collar liner that is sticking to the lens doesn't wipe off easily, and obviously dunking it in soap and water isn't practical. The collar with the worn black lining is the original Canon (or allegedly Canon) collar. And you can see the black gunk on the outside of the lens that has transferred to the lens. Any ideas of how to repair the original collar; and/or how to buy a Canon replacement?
