I still haven't seen the full original post yet, but it's pretty clear Patti is trying to remove some gunk of unknown nature. My personal opinion, although YMMV, is that both lighter fluid and WD-40 will leave oily residues, not the most desirable way to clean the gunk, I have for many years found naphtha, or more commonly known as Colemen's camping fluid, would work really well for almost anything I use it on such as tape residue, . Naphtha is relatively strong, but not acetone strong, it also evaporates 100% and quickly so there won't be any undesirable residue left on the surface when you are done. You can get a small jar of the naphtha from hardware or outdoor stores, give it a try and you just might find it work very well.
