You are reasonably correct. What they typically have is a state machine,
which is not really a processor.  It's hardcoded logic, no "firmware" in the
traditional sense involved.

As a note to Javier's post, the CF spec supports three basic modes.  One is
an I/O mode, second is a memory mode and third is an IDE mode.  For the CF
spec, search the Internet for cfspc2_0.pdf, and if you can't find it, I can
email it to you if interested.
