Spin was always a strange term for someone like me who bowled off-
spinners - how could a point particle such as an electron spin as a
ball does on its axis? One follows that the term meant intrinsic
angular momentum and was an explanation of a fourth quantum degree of
freedom. We can't fully explain the drift, swing and turn of a
cricket ball in the classical world. Quantum world has 'lost in
translation' problems. Reason eventually destroys itself. Whitehead
once warned on the bifurcation of nature.

At the other end of 'size' we 'see' a dark flow hurtling towards some
point beyond the 45 billion year edge of universe - but when you look
at what 'see' means things get much more uncertain. I seem to
remember the gentlemen you mention's scheme was finally accepted
because of its role in the fine description of the hydrogen atom -
though even this is still subject to investigation. I would write
'there is a lot we don't know yet'. As for the Vedas:
Questions so simple they were all but unanswerable.
He recalled the questions one by one
and they were simple all right
but in the dumbest of ways.
|Ratner's Star, by Don DeLillo

The spin quantum number s has only one value for a given species of
particle. But a particle with s > 0 can be in an infinite number of
spin
states. The simplest of these are states ... fortunately I was able to
forget all in chemistry! Tiny stuff seems to get fuller and fuller as
we try to explain.
