I've seen some black hole places here in the Midwest and Central States.

Over Southern California, can there be any doubt about where the horizon
is on a clear night?  It's BRIGHT on the ground there!

I think it's also good to consider that in an airplane with relatively
light control forces like an Ercoupe, (or Bonanza) and low wings,
spatial disorientation can be a bigger problem than in, say, a 172.

Granted, the spin-resistant design helps to remove one of the
possible outcomes. But a pilot with the 'leans' in a 'Coupe can
induce quite a nasty 'death spiral' when fear takes over.
