Tim, Climbing high and leaning definitely saves fuel, lets you extend your range and by skipping a fuel stop, perhaps increasing your effective cruise speed. The fuel expended in the climb can be 80% or 90% recovered by a gentle cruise descent with good planning leaving you with big improvements in miles per gallon. For flying low, do some figuring and see if you can slow down a bit, save fuel and maybe skip a fuel stop. Anytime I skip a fuel stop, I save at least an hour. That really improves my average speed for the day's flying. Check out the last couple of chapters of Stick and Rudder, where they talk about slowing down for maximum range of cruise. OTOH, if you can't gain a fuel stop and can easily afford higher fuel bills, you can do a high-speed cruise and get there faster. Either way, it should be a great trip.
