Hartmut, I don't think you can compare the straight elevator to the old ball-style connector. I've flown my Coupe for almost 21 years, about 1550 hours with the straight elevator, and have absolutely no problem with it. The ball, on the other hand, can (and does) break right off, leaving you with absolutely no steering control. If this happens when you touch down, probably going around 55 mph, you can be in deep trouble, especially if the runway has ditches or trees along side it. I agree with Ed's first statement. ALL Coupes should have this done. Very cheap insurance, easy to do or not. For some of us is the conversion to the later style steering not as easy as one might think. Some steering push rods need a complete replacement. That adds $121.44 ercoupe push rod (16.5625'') to the $81.55 sk-57 ercoupe steering kit Plus paperwork and hours one might end up paying an extra $400 for the conversion. One might say , It's worth the safety, but then from what I heard about the incidents where people lost control, it seems manageable. Things break, but having you saying 'NO Coupes MOVING with the old ball-style connector!' because of that is not justified in my eyes. Only because one person has made an update to his plane which he things is a essential improvement, does it not make one. Thinking that way I could demand that all Ercoupes should FLY only with split elevators. When I got my Coupe 24 years ago, it was OLD news that ALL steering balls NEED TO BE REPLACED!!!! Unless y'all KNOW you have the bolt connection, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND you check your plane on the NEXT trip to the airport. There should be NO Coupes MOVING with the old ball-style connector! The pilot stopped in a fairly short distance and didn't hit anything in the process. We all rushed out to see what was wrong, and found that the little steering ball had snapped off right in the top of the threaded area. He replaced the ball with the Heim bearing right after that, and so did I. This is SK-57, for about $75.00, and is well worth it. As we were taxing out of our tiedown area I noticed that we could only make right turns. It turned out that that was the way the wheel was pointed when the little ball that hooks up the to the steering rod snapped off. Oh well, better at my homeport than down at Hoquiam. My question is, how much control do you have if the was to happen while landing? We hope to meet the rest of the Oregon, Washington Ercoupe Troop at the next get together.
