Yes, even with the Metroguide.

Let me recount my history of use with the 295, which
may explain my responses.

I bought mine 3 years ago, and was willing to pay the
big bucks precisely because I thought it could be
useful in a car. I had used Hertz' Neverlost system
(http://www.hertz.com/byr/whyhertz/byrwhyhertzneverlost.jsp)
and really liked it. I thought the 295 would give
turn-by-turn instructions on the screen, which would
be pretty useful (the Neverlost system also speaks, a
real advantage).

I was very disappointed to learn that all the 295 does
is give a compass heading and distance to your
destination. Yes, that is helpful, better than
nothing, and I've used it in strange places as an
assist, but it doesn't compare to turn-by-turn
directions. Certainly not useful enough to bother
taking in the car routinely. Another poster says
differently, that's fine too, but that has been my
experience. The 295 will show you a detailed map (w/
Metroguide) of where you are, but after d*mn near
getting in a couple of wrecks studying the map while
driving, I decided that wasn't too useful in practice.

The 196 I think does generate turn-by-turn
instructions, still visual only, no talking. Until
you drive a car with a talking GPS you can't believe
how helpful that is.

What I would like in an ideal aviation GPS would be:

-many color, high resolution, fast update screen
-slightly larger viewing area than 295
-low battery drain
-vert/horiz format
-terrain and obstacle data; even the sectional MEF
would be great
-airport taxi diagrams: imagine being on some strange
airport, intersecting runways with confusing taxiways,
and you see exactly where you are and all runways and
taxiways labeled.

That would be a killer GPS and I don't think it's
impossible to acheive. C'mon Garmin!
