Paul--

I started out using the Garmin 295 in my Comanche--yoke mounted. I got so
comfortable with it that I rarely ever
used the dual VOR's I had in that bird. I sold the Comanche and kept the
295. Now it is my 'Coupe, hard-wired
into the electrical bus. I don't have to worry about batter drain with
that. I also installed a fixed Garmin antenna
about halfway between the cockpit and the tail feathers, doing away with
that little rubber cup thing. With the little
portable antenna I could lock onto three satellites. With the permanent
antenna, it locks onto a minimum of five
satellites every time, and very quickly. I find the display to be bright
enough even with the all-glass cockpit of the
'Coupe.

To call up airports, it is sort of like doing those stupid text messages
on
a cell phone. You have to use the arrow buttons
to scroll to the first letter, then press enter. Then go to the second
letter with the left/right arrow keys, then scroll up or
down with the up/down arrow keys. For instance, my local airport here in
Gatesville, Texas is 05F. If you are trying
to find your way here, you scroll to numeric zero, the to numeric 5, then
scroll through the numbers and into the alphabet until
you get to F. By that time, it gives you an indication of "City/County
Airport, Gatesville, Texas" Hit the "GoTo" button and
it draws a map from where you are directly to 05F. Screen to the second
page past the map and it tells you your current altitude, true ground
speed,
miles to the airport and time en-route based on current speed. The 295
also
has that V-Nav system in
it, a sort of glide slope that works with airports so equipped. If I am
flying to Waco, for example (30 miles from here) and have
ACT entered, I get a blue line across the middle of the screen. As long
as
that line is centered, you are on a good altitude for
approach and landing. Keep it centered on your approach and you will
descend at the proper angle etc for a good landing.

I think the 295 is a brilliant piece of gear. Some folks don't like the
smaller screen size, but in a 'Coupe, when it is sitting
there right under your chin, it is just fine for me. You can upgrade the
data base via your computer. Costs about $20 per upgrade from Garmin, and
you can also upgrade software versions free of charge from Garmin also via
your computer. I know I am
under-utilizing my 295, just because I haven't taken the time to learn
everything it will do. It gets me where I want to go, and if I stray from
the flight path, that little airplane sitting on the line drawn on the
screen moves off, telling me which way I need to go to get back on course.
You also have the option of going from the map to a VOR-type course
deviation indicator, but I like the map much better.

Maybe that's more than you wanted to know, but there it is. I would
recommed the 295 to anyone with a 'Coupe looking for a safe, reliable GPS
system. Can't say much about using it in ground mode, since I have never
had need of that.
