Wayne,

It wasn’t because he lost money from me.  I sent quite a few pilots to him.  I bet he went on to bigger and better things.

Knoxville, Iowa.  Hummmm.  I’ve flown in there many times.  One NW/SE paved runway.  No grass runway up to 13 years ago when I moved to Illinois.  I don’t remember there being that much grass available for airplane parking – if we hit near the all-time high of around 119 planes, we’ll have to take off and land vertically.

I most vividly remember landing there as a passenger in a Piper Colt (two-place version of a Tri-Pacer) in a wind we thought was 25-30 direct cross but which had a gust near 45 just as we landed!!!!!  Very short ground-roll which was very important since we IMMEDIATELY were blown toward the runway light on the downwind side of the runway.  The pilot stopped in time, though.  I never had any doubt that he’d get us down right-side up though I DID think the prop was going to eat that runway light.

That’s where the avionics shop used to be with the skilled proprietor who diagnosed my radio noise in 10 minutes, fixed it without tools and wouldn’t take any money (after I’d spent over $600 having A&Ps and AIs try to solve the problem!)!  Landings.com doesn’t show any avionics shop still in business at Knoxville.  Oh well.

For info about Knoxville Municipal, the airport designator is OXV.

Yes, Ed, the Nationals next year will be in Knoxville, Iowa, a little south east of Des Moines.  Jack Arthur and Mike Abrahamson are putting it on.

Was there a vote on where next year’s National Convention will be?

Hi Ed,
I'm sure that our fuel figures are a combination of a lot of factors.  Actually, Dennis was exaggerating a bit.  I had 4.5 gallons/hour and he had 6.5.  Another Couper flew with us from Daytona Beach to Lawrenceville, GA, and his fuel consumption was a little worse than Dennis'.  Engine efficiency would also be a factor.
We missed you at the convention.

Syd,
Those drag elements don't sound like enough to account for a 47%
increase in fuel consumption.  Overly rich mixture on his engine (or
overly lean on yours) or both might account for a big portion of the
difference.
4.25 versus 6.25 is a BIG difference.

Hi Greg,
Dennis' Coupe has more drag due to two large venturis as opposed to
one small one on mine; landing lights on the gear legs, and I have none;
a bubble windshield and mine is flat; more antennas than mine; and no
nose gear fairing, but I have one.  Also, in order to go the same
airspeed with the added drag, he would have to be turning more rpm.  I
believe his tachometer reads low, maybe 100 rpm or more.  Neither of us
leaned, and he didn't follow directly behind me, so I don't think he was
making a lot of power adjustments.  I think the drag is the reason.  I
don't know his empty weight, but remember, I was carrying a passenger
and he was not.  His carburetor could be set richer too.  No, I don't
have an EGT, but have had no problems with valves or oil temps.  In
fact, my oil temps were usually about 10 degrees less than Dennis'.

We both have D models, both have 85 hp engines, both have 71 x 48

if you can.  I can't.  But I'm happy. :-)

There can be one and only one explanation...Dennis is running a richer
mixture.
Probably richer than necessary. That said, 4.25 gph at cruise is
suspiciously towards
the lean side of things except at 10,000 feet. Do you have an EGT?
Greg
