Darick,

Thanks for the confirmation. I'd heard that this would be the case.

The oral grilling came about, I'm told, because there are so many
differences in the aircraft to be used for Sport. Due to this, they wanted
to have the questioning done in a more interactive manner by the DPE.

A Sport Pilot needs to know everything that a private pilot needs to know
except radio navigation, night flying, operations in class B, C, D airspace
and . . . is there anything else?

This leaves almost everything else that you DO need to know to be a Sport
Pilot.

So far, Sport Pilots have had really remarkable success in the written test
with almost all passing and an average score, I heard a while back, of 97%.
But the FAA will make up for that ease with a more difficult oral test
before the checkride.

In looking at the requirements, I've thought that it might be worth it for a
prospective Sport Pilot to go through both the Sport Pilot AND the Private
Pilot ground school courses from Sporty's or Gleim or wherever.

But, even so, Sport is an easier way to go than PP or Rec.
