Ed - Rec. pilot was a failure because it requires a medical, and the training isn't that far from what's required for full PP privileges. So, why bother. What can't be measured in Sport stats, until somebody figures out how to do an accurate study/survey is how many people like I are exercising sport privileges, when we have much higher certificates in our pockets. I'm a commercial, ASMEL, helicopter and glider. CFII for ASME. Yet, I'm flying and instructing as a sport pilot and sport instructor. Nowhere do I, or people like me, show up in the sport stats. I personally think that number is currently in the low hundreds of pilots, but there's no way to be sure. A few months ago, there was a lot of disparaging discussion on the basis of only about 70 not previously licensed Sport Pilots having achieved their license. Part of the criticism was because the majority of those were Sport DPE and Sport CFI getting licensed. It seemed at that time that very, very few new pilots had gotten a Sport license in the first year. Some pessimists are holding out for total Sport failure as abject as Rec. Most of us are expecting a slower growth than predicted but still a medium good final result.
