I am planning to pick up a coup in Wisconsin and fly it to Seattle.
Current I am planning to fly mid march but I am not sure what the best
route - especially across the rockies nor what weather to expect in
April -
Any pilots out there familiar with the route?
Steve,
I have not flown the route, but I have driven it many times -- from the
Chicago area to the Seattle area. If I were to fly it, I would plan
either I 90 to Seattle or I 80 to Salt Lake City and then I 84 up to
the Columbia River and down to Portland. Following the interstates will
allow you to keep the road ahead in view as there are no tunnels (which
is the problem with following the railroads) and the highest pass you'll
hit is about 8000 ft or so as I remember.
The weather could be a significant concern. The winds can cause a lot of
heavy turbulence and storms come up very quickly. I've made the trip
driving in April several times on both routes and had problems with snow
and ice on each. I've also had a lot of sunny days with light winds:)
The weather gets better each month and usually is best from June through
October. However, April should be doable IF you are not on a tight
schedule and you are willing to get up early in the morning and only fly
when the weather lets you.
