Hey Stephen: It sounds like you will have a fun trip. I have made it
several times. The lowest route is the southern one, via El Paso. If you go by
way of Salt Lake City, you can ease off to the north by going down a canyon,
instead of following the road. I think you can get by with 7500 feet by going
down the canyon to Ogden. Ogden Jet Center has been very responsive in the past.
I have not been there in a few years, so ownership could have changed.
My last trip out, in 2000, we flew out along the
southern route, and then came back the northern way via Glacier and Yellowstone.
We had an O-200 powered Coupe then, and still had to climb slowly to get to
14,500 to get over the big ones east of Jackson Hole. I would not recommend
going that way.
