Good analysis Ed...
Let me add that the most likely problem of no snubber cable is in the D
model, with limited elevator travel - thus lower nose on landing -- IF ONE IS
NOT AT THE FULL ELEVATOR POSITION ON LANDING......
Dragging the nose gear across the pavement is not good. Yes, it does
swivvle if one lets the control wheel go.....but not if you are holding it
steady...And, If you let it go, and it swivvles, then the up wing aeliron
increases lift on the up wind side, potentially creating problems....
To successfully land a coupe you must keep the nose wheel off the ground
until the coupe itself swivvles straight down the runway, THEN LOWER THE NOSE,
AND LOSE LIFT......RESULTING IN LITTLE IF ANY SIDE STRESSES ON THE NOSE GEAR AND
ENGINE MOUNT ( NOSE GEAR IS ATTACHED TO ENGINE MOUNT).
In a D Model, with only 9 degrees up elevator, one can help the needed high
nose position by carrying a little power on landing...by increasing prop wash
over the elevator, thus raising the nose sufficiently even with only 9 degrees
up travel.
Yes, this makes for a longer, faster landing, and that is why ERCO only
made two D models....the longer , faster landing was deemed an unsuitable
characteristic for the Ercoupe. The later Split elevator with 20 degrees
up travel fixed this unsuitable characteristic.
