Glen,
When the engine starts, the starter gear is still engaged with the flywheel.
The movement of the flywheel against the starter clutch causes the starter gear
to be thrown back into its retracted position. Essentially the same as on an
auto engine.

Subject: [ercoupe-tech] starter question
Date: Wed, 1 Sep 2010 06:54:07 -0400

Gang I have a question about the starter, the one style, not the newer
pushbutton design. The question is this: Is there supposed to be a spring
that forces the "Bendix" gear to retract after the starter lever is released?
The starter lever itself has a spring that causes it to return to the resting
position but what causes the gear that engages the flywheel to retract after
the start has completed?
