Is there supposed to be a spring that forces the "Bendix" gear to retract after the starter lever is released?
There are 2 springs inside the clutch assembly. The first, the lighter of the two, pushes the clutch assembly back out of engagement with the cam gear. The gear is not pushed out by over running like a Bendix drive. The second spring is in the plunger the lever acts against and allows the lever to make full travel even if the gears do not mesh and move into place. this spring is a lot heavier than the first. If the gears do not mesh at first, the starter turns when the lever engages the switch and the heavy spring pushes the gears into mesh.
