Really, I thing that we can live without hierarchy, without
folders. Each
project/folder/call it how you like should be identified only by:
- name (subject)
- tags (textual or color)
- relevant dates/history: creation, modification, view
- star/flag or any kind of simple mark
This can be applied to anything on the system, from documents through
collections of documents (projects/folders) to emails, contacts,
blog posts,
news from RSS feeds (see www.google.com/reader)
I've long been an advocate of a flat file structure, so I think this
is a great idea. Basically, all Projects exist in the same space, and
can be filtered/organized based on tags and other search criteria.
And, as was suggested in SILC during a conversation yesterday, a
hierarchy can be inferred based on tags (just like GMail uses
labels). Your star suggestion was something I hadn't thought about
yet, but it makes a lot of sense to have a very simple badging
mechanism like that.
Additionaly there can be 'share' attribute, if you want to share
the object with
someone else.
Of course -- this is one of the hallmarks of the Etoile environment! :)
Each object can belong (have association with, be linked with,...)
any project
or other object.
Yep -- definitely another advantage of avoiding a hierarchy.
