I've long been an advocate of a flat file structure, so I think this is a great idea.

This reminded me of a study I saw about a year ago. We all like hierarchies, because they are easy to work with. It's easy to see how things relate within a hierarchy, and assemble them together. The reason for this is that people who get on well with hierarchies tend to be good at (or, at least, interested in) programming[1].

This means that programmers tend to generate hierarchical interfaces, and then inflict them on the rest of the world, who don't really understand them, like them, or want them.

[1] Whether the hierarchical nature of most programming languages is a cause or effect of this was not addressed.
