I liked what you said about chaining filters on your mockup. What  
about being able to group by project/date/author/type/tags/metadata/ 
etc and be able to sort them at your wish?

Something like:

Search all things tagged red and sort by project and author:

Tag: Red
------------
Project 1
................

Author A:
- Object A

Author B:
- Object B

Project 2
................

Author A:
- Object A

.
.
.
