I've been forced to work with DirecPC's 2-way satellite system recently,
and to my dismay, the standard config (even with static IP, and service
level they say is for sharing among ~3 computers) uses a USB-connected
modem that has windows-ONLY drivers... drat! Actually, the mo/dem is
two components (modulator=send, demodulator=receive, iirc) but still
connects via USB... one could get a cheapO winbloze box to share the
connection, but I did manage to google up a page where someone hacked
their modem to use ethernet directly... I'm not sure what model# it was,
but google should scare up *something* for you. In general, make sure
you're looking at 2-way systems, as some (mostly older ones) are 1-way,
using a phone dialup for outgoing content (ie, web requests, etc).

How far out are you? (hmm, I guess you're pretty "far-out" if you want
to use linux to access a satellite <grin:>) I ask about your location
specifically to see if you have line-of-sight to downtown, or even any
hi-tech neighbors, who you might point a directional wifi antenna at.
If this is possible, you'd be MUCH happier with the connection, as
satellite connectivity incurs quite a lag, darn that speed of light!
I am also on the south-side, but close enough for DSL, 27th and only a
block away from The Drag (Willamette)... I don't turn on my access point
very often, though, since I don't have enough cool toys yet, to make it
worthwhile. With a well-pointed good directional antenna, I think you
can connect from miles away...

Alternatively, you can talk to ATG about installing a line... Kbob might
be able to offer some good insight on this -- Kbob, are you reading this
yet? (He's away from Eugene at the moment)

I did not find DirecPC's tech people to be very helpful... but google
had lots of info, and I also spent some time looking at WinGate's
KnowledgeBase (they make windows connection-sharing software), which
mentions DirecPC... also SyGate makes a similar product. Apparently the
non-standard USB modem connection doesn't work with M$'s own ICS
(Internet Connection Sharing), but I'm not sure about specifics.
Hope this helps!
