One of the nice things about a degree program is that they teach you *how* to learn-- if you pay attention. This makes things much easier (and cheaper) when you need to learn new technology. Given the quality of the vendor-specific training I've had (MSCE classes-- the Cisco class I had was actually pretty good), I find that I learn much more in a shorter period of time by picking up a book and installing whatever I need to fiddle with in a test environment. The theoretical background is also most useful when it comes to troubleshooting. Finally, one of the more underappreciated benefits of a liberal arts-type education is that it can lead to many insights into how people in a given culture behave the way they do. This is a very useful thing to know if you ever do any tech support, as it makes relating to non-geeks much less exasperating, at least until an individual forgets a password twice in one day.... Plus, at least at the U of O, you get to play with Sparcs. :) Cheers, Dennis -- Injustice is happening now; suffering is happening now. We have choices to make now. To insist on absolute certainty before starting to apply ethics to life decisions is a way of choosing to be amoral. --Richard M.
