As far a re-writable CD media I have not found any that is reliable in any of my machines.

The drag/drop disks, as Mr. O mentioned, probably have UDF filesystems. "Regular" CDs have ISO9660 filesystems. How are you trying to mount the CD?
I have had some problems with some of the XP
drag/drop discs working in anything but the CD R/RW drive, when I am in windows.
Some CD drives have trouble with certain CD media. Have you noticed that some brands of CD-R/W media work always and others not?
