Indeed, as I was catching up with this thread (sorry I've been so busy lately I haven't been keeping up with EUGLUG!), I was about to send off the "swag" correction of terms, and wanted to offer this interesting background:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swag

However, Jamie is right to keep this on-track, as we are trying to promote FOSS at the OCF next weekend, and have had a variety of goodies to hand out in the past.... so if anyone has some fun innovative ideas for this, please let us know: Ed, Jamie, Patick, and myself will be working the "Doors of Expression" booth in the Community Village, out at the fair next weekend. Not just cool stuff to give away, but cool software we can show off... I'm down with introducing people to OpenOffice, Firefox browser, and Thunderbird email client, and there are a few other "for fun" packages I'll try to make sure I have updated to show off as well. I wish I had my mini-itx box setup (power supply failure == no workie) with mythtv, as this would be a really fun way to show off FOSS's capabilities for the home user. Mostly we do a lot of talking about open sores, and answering questions to newbies, and also a surprising number of folks who have tried or are trying "that free stuff".

big-ups to y'all and best regards,

    Ben

For the newbies... the original term for Free Stuff Given Away to promote a computer-related product was "swag," which was (apparently) what hobos called the collection of stuff in their bag. The term has apparently been around for a while because it's used in the Australian song "Waltzing Matilda" (swagman = itinerant laborer) which was written in the 1890's.

Schome where along the way schome one decided to get cute and shtarted referring to the computer shtuff as schwag instead of swag. The term is in common enough usage that it's likely to suffer a change in definition. As has happened in the past with 'cardinal' and 'funky'.

Gawd, I hope this wasn't too pedantic. Oh well, I took all this time to write it so I might as well hit 'send'.

Ken
