I thought I'd pick the collective EugLUG brain before hitting the stores.

CRITERIA:

Usage: tmp backup for repairs (myself and friends), 2nd backup for the road.
It would be nice to put an OS on it to boot from; maybe even multi-boot,
but it's not intended for production usage.

Capacity: given my current needs I'd say 500 GB would be more than plenty, but I'm not sure if I'll feel the same near the end of its live cycle.

Speed: any (really) significant differences between leading models?

Robustness: known/reported failures; good/bad brand names?
Warranty: years? -- actual claim/service experience?

Integrated, proprietary annoyances (like U3 mini-OS on SanDisk USB sticks) would be a turn-off

Personality: usually I'm not interested in the 'largest metrics at the lowest price' -- I am happy to pay a couple extra $$/year for customer satisfaction and quality over the life time of a good product.

So even if you don't have an answer to all of the above questions I'd appreciate your comments.
