Yes, USB is not as fast as eSATA.

Yes you would need additional HW to drive eSATA. But it isn't
expensive to give your computer that capability. You can pick up a
PCI card for close to $20.  (And since I haven't bought an eSATA
HD, I don't know it's cost.)  And if it doesn't come with all of
the cables, you need to buy them.

SATA is good, but only recently supported by Linux. There are still
some rocky parts.
