Yes, you will.  I think you hit the EV nail on the head when you said "he's
got plenty of range for his needs."  Everybody's needs vary, and thus our
EVs designs do too.  What might be considered "good range" for one person
might not be nearly enough for someone else.

I planning on doing a CRX or similar conversion next summer.  I am planning
on 192 volts of Optimas (16) and  DCP T-Rex 600 amp controller, which will
handle the higher voltages.  This should give me decent performance (light
car and a lot of power), but a really short range if I use the car to its
potential (really ineffecient).  Driving carefully, I estimate a maximum
range of 30, maybe 35 miles.  Use fewer batteries and your rnage will be
less.  My 2 pennies
