Whether right-sized or expansion-sized run it in conduit, so it can be
changed later without much hassle. 
Like Dave says you only want to trench once. Ideally while the trench is
open a second conduit will be dropped for communication cables.

Right.  There's no reason not to except higher cost.  In fact you should 
upsize to allow for voltage drop on long runs.  Here's a voltage drop

If this is a detatched garage, trenching is a significant portion of the
project 
budget.  You don't want to dig twice, so it makes sense to drop the largest 
wire you can afford, in case you later need to upgrade the service.
