I agree. GE did something wrong in the TEVan motor design. As a

If a motor has interpoles and/or compensating windings, it doesn't need
brush advance, and performance for both motor/generator operation is the
same. The antique aircraft motor-generators had both, and would happily
run at double rated voltage and current without arcing problems.
