I use an isolated charger so grounding the EV to earth isn't really an 
issue, but, as far as ground fault from the batteries to the frame of 
the car, I'm clear - no ground fault whatsoever.  I check it every time 
I water my batts.  Zip.  Zero.  None.  I've got pretty darn clean 
floodies in plastic boxes sitting in their metal frames, double 
contactors, the works.  I also use a big ol' Lester ferro charger which 
is nicely isolated.  When I get myself a PFC20 I will most certainly 
ground whatever EV I have then to earth and use a GFI, it makes sense.  
If it is tripping there is a problem which needs to be corrected.  Be 
safe!  I may not take this quite as far as you David, but I agree with 
most of what you are saying.  Electrical safety is a good thing!  Like 
you I'm not taking that chance.
