I have a '92 civic (automatic transmission), and I am thinking about
converting to an EV. What kind of problems will I run in to if I try to
convert this vehicle? Has anyone ever interfaced to the transmission to
tell it when to shift? I know that to get more torque in an EV, one shifts
to a higher gear (like from 2nd to 3rd)... It seems that the shifting logic
built into the car would not know when to shift.
Any comments on using an automatic transmission in a conversion?

I will add that FWD can give more regenerative braking torque for the
same reason as rear wheel drives can give more acceleration, weight
transfer.
I am a rear wheel drive person myself, but I could imagine an AC dual
motor machine to have 2 motors, one up front and one in back and a pair
of inverters that balance the brakeing and accelerating bias from 50/50
at cruise to 70/30 during braking and 30/70 during launch.
I like working on ideas like this, Imagine a hollow shaft AC motor with
a GM style (4t65e-HD) final drive and a pair of half shafts to the wheels.
They come with a 3.29:1 ratio. It would either be a rather
torquey-high-amp AC motor or we would need some higher ratios.
Soldering Aluminum.
I have heard of this stuff before, and honestly, I haven't tried it.
So I will retract my statement until I give it a go. But can you solder
alum to copper with it?

Thanks for the reply. I was looking at the vacuum pumps on eBay but didn't
realize there were significant differences between the types. The ones you warn
against all seem to be priced fairly low. The good ones are about 10 times the
price. Now I know why.

I posted a message some years ago regards these pumps.
Maybe you can find it in the archives.
There are two basic types of pumps Mercedes use. One is a diaphragm type used
for central locking which are prone to diaphragm rupture and the other is a
self lubing rotary vane unit which is used to fully close the doors if you
don't close them properly first time. The later of these two is the one you
want.
My own EV conversion has been using one without fault for 7 years - 64,000km.
The original application for these pumps is demanding. The main reason they are
replaced is because they cannot pump to the specified pressure. At the end of
each pressure cycle they go into vacuum mode to remove any moisture that may
have entered the system.
They make an excellent vacuum pump for an EV. They do not need to be operated
at full power for our application. I run mine at half power by using a simple
NE555 switch mode circuit with an inductor and freewheel diode. Pumps down to
25" mercury. Operates for about 10-20 seconds per brake application. The pump
is barely audible even in a low ambient noise environment. You will require a
vacuum tank (as used for vacuum assisted trailer brakes), one way valve and a
low pressure switch. If you want I can email the schematic of the circuit (bit
map image).

Well...
Keep in mind my transmission is an "intelligent" type, not a brainless
hyrdromatic, and is controlled by a computer.
The motor will start via the Zilla controller by turning the key to the on
position and holding in the "S" button (no longer used) on the shift lever.
This will bring the potbox resistance down to zero, allowing the controller
to start. Once running the motor will level off at 300 RPM, running the
steering pump and air conditioner compressor as necessary and keeping the
transmission happy. This has been done by others and seems to work. In my
case I am using the original ICE throttle body complete with cables for the
accellerator and cruise control. It also contains the throttle position
sensor (tps), necessary for the transmission control computer. It is not
very large, is made of aluminum and will work nicely on the plate I have
made up for it. This also allows me to set the "minimum" for the idle
speed.
RE: batteries.
I have been contemplating this for a long time. People I have great respect
for (like John Wayland) tell me to go with the AGM's. I get nothing but bad
feedback about "nasty floodies" and will save weight and maintenance.
RE: cost
My cost should be $6000-$7000 tops. I have the ability to do much of the
work myself and a lot of support via the school I work at. They are
fabricating most of the metal work I will need with exception of the taper
lock which Mike Brown has agreed to do. (Sorry Mike if you are reading this
I have been messing around getting it to you).. My only big items left are
the battery pack, controller and whatever charger I end up with. The rest
is "hillbilly engineering"...yes we have them in MO.

The big question I have is how are you going to get the hydraulic fluid
ready for the actuation of the gears? There will be a serious delay
between
when you push the pedal to when the pump is running and getting the fluid
to
where it needs to go. I would think that spending upwards of 10,000 would
be a lot for just 30 miles a day. What are the amp/hour capacities of the
AGM batteries you are going to use? The Trojan T-105s are 225 I think for
a
6 hour discharge to 80% DOD. With a 144V system of T-105s you can expect
30
miles or so. I have yet to hear of an AGM that can deliver that much
current.

I think my first message got cut off before I got a chance to post it...so
if this is a repeat, I apologize to the group.
Thanks for your interest in my project..good luck with yours as well.
My car was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Fantastic vehicle in
outstanding condition, original retail price about $40,000 in 1995. So
Automatic or not, I grabbed it. Outstanding suspension, brakes, features,
perfect for me in every other way.
The transmission would be hard to change, possibly requiring axle shafts,
having no clutch pedal, shift lever, etc, and of course additional cost.
On
the other had it is electronic controlled via 4 solenoids. This allows me
to lock the torque converter, choose shift points, etc. as I please, or
just
lock it in one gear and go. The Hyundai automatic is about as efficient
as
you can get with an auto.
I expect to lose some efficiency, but my goal was to drive a 2900lb fully
accessorized car an average of 15 miles per day with a 156v pack of AGMs.
I
am told this will be possible, and I will likely get 30-35 miles actual
range. In this I will be happy.
I have 2 objectives. One is to keep the "niceness" of the car, and the
other is to drive my 10-15 mile per day average. I think it will do both.
I have received pretty good advice from some great minds. One of them is
an
ex-GM service manager and he tells me the automatic transaxle will do just
fine. In fact it is a bit easier to rig up than a manual, and the torque
converter weighs about the same as a manual flywheel on most engines.
I am told that because of how I am doing some things even my cruise
control
will work again.
The car has to be nice enough for my wife to drive it, so I suppose that
is
probably the MOST important aspect of the project!

Mark,
Is there any special reason why you are running an automatic
transmission on your EV conversion? I would thik you are sacrificing a
huge
bit of energy just to keep the pump running for that. Didn't SAAB make a
stick shift version of that car? I have been reading your blog - very
cool
indeed! I think when I begin the conversion of my 1990 240SX I will do
the
same thing so people can watch my progress as well.

The 1500Watt harbor frieght shrink gun made a short high pitched noise
like the motor ran away and then it went up in a spectacular cloud of
smoke not even 1/2 way thru the job.
Not wanting to let the day go to waste, I pushed on using the propane
torch, where I had to, to continue and just leaving the stuff loose, "to
be shrunk later" , everywhere else. I tried not to scortch things too
much.
Then I ran out of propane :-(
So I carried a few cables into the house and sat down in front of the
stove and just rolled them around over the flame.
and... Wow!, that works really good. I guess the spread out lower
temperature and cleaner gas is more appropriate. It doesn't oxidize or
scortch. Of course, There isn't a "significant other" here to protest

Maybe not a new idea, but this is the first time I've thought about this.
To me, the bane of FWD's is their transmissions power handling capability.
What if the stock motor and trans was removed and either a motor with
one or two shafts was installed and the CV Shafts were adapted
directly to the motor? It looks like it would be able to be connected
easily?
http://www.tciauto.com/sport_compact.htm
If so, ANY FWD ever made could be used... A a direct drive 13" in a
Neon, Focus, Civic...?
---
Why can't those CV Shafts take more power? What specifically is the
weak link in them? They look like the same size and material regular
rear wheel drive axles are made from and they take absurd power levels
and are like 2' long each!

What would be an ideal FWD car to make an impressively fast
performance car out of be?

This is incredible,
I signed up last night and tonight I have 45 minutes worth of EV emails. I
was beginning to think I was alone!!
First an introduction and short history.
Name is Mark Grasser
Live in Eliot Maine for 3 years now
Mostly lived in Kenosha, Wisconsin, a few years in Mount Clemens MI.
Background: too much to list. Mostly Marine Electronics, some industrial
test electronics. Machine work, Bridgeport and toolmakers lathe experience.
Most of my life as an Electronics Design Engineer, Last five years as a
switching power supply / battery charger Design Engineer.
Project about to undertake: Electric 1996 Golf Automatic.
So here is my plan. I am looking for help and guidance, anyone that says I
can't have electric windows, air conditioning, alarm systems, Rear window
defogger and an Automatic transmission please don't bother. Well unless you
have REALLY good information.
My plan so far:
Advanced DC motor 9" traction motor. Is this too big?
18 - 8 volt Trojan T-875 batteries.
Controller, My own, with regen, I find what's available ridiculously
expensive.
Battery charger, my own, Child's play, will be 3 step, variable rate
absorption, float, on demand equalization. PIC controlled.
Air conditioning, yes but not sure how yet.
PS and PB, vacuum pump for the brakes, not sure on the Power Steering.
Auto trans. why? Doesn't make sense to shift if this is a futuristic car.
(Born and raised on stick shift. This is the first auto in the family in 15
years)
VW Beetle auto has a final drive on 4.875:1. This equates to 5200 rpm in top
gear at 70 mph. Beetle trans will fit into the Golf. Electric motor connects
strait to the transmission, no torque converter used. Oil pressure will be
created using an external dc driven pump. Over drive gearing will be
discarded. VW trans is electrically shifted and already has it's own shift
computer which will be discarded and replaced with a PIC based computer to
change the shift points as needed. Can be programmed to upshift when
touching the brake lights the help with regeneration.
Batteries: I plan on cutting and welding on the body. A 10 battery box under
the floor where the fuel tank and spare tire are, a box with three batteries
under the rear seat and 5 more, not sure how yet under the hood with the
motor.
I have been in contact with EV of America, some of my choices are by his
recommendation.
I am not yet sure where to buy from, his prices are kind of steep, well so
are everyone else's that I have contacted.
Any info from the gods amongst you will be greatly appreciated. I need to
get this project done before all the gas stations close in the spring. :-)

Easy, depending on your fabrications skills. Get your 9" motor with a
shaft out each end. Then fab up some brackets to belt drive your AC
and PS.

Hi all,
Anyone out there have any information on the Chloride motor controllers that
were OEM installed in the Conceptor G-Vans? Right now I really need to know
the upper voltage limit these can safely handle (to see if I can run 4 more
batteries) and of course any thing else I can find as far as schematics,
trouble shooting diagrams, service manuals etc would find a willing home
with me. Glad to pay a fair price for anything that might be available. BTW,
I have long ago tried to query Chloride for info on these, never got an
answer. Anyone got Chloride connections that could help? I imagine Chloride
is deathly afraid of creating a technical support liability, not looking to
hassle them for freebies. I am just trying to get a couple of these fine and
useful EVs back into service and to help support fellow G-van owners around
the country that are doing likewise. These are way cool rides.

Mark, sounds like you have a good plan. Here are a few things:
- power steering. You can use a Toyota MR2 power steering pump, or since
you are going auto, have your main motor spin all the time and use the OEM
pump off the end shaft. Randy at CanEV.com did this with an echo
conversion.
- regen. Not sure if brushed DC motors can do this, something to do with the
way the brushes are advanced. Check with others.
- AC. Nice feature, for some people in hot climates this is a must. For me
(canada west coast), it is a luxury. You can run a seperate motor, or, once
again, since you are going automatic, you can have the main motor run all
the time and power the compressor off the end shaft.
- Personally I am very interested in the protocol/interface to change the
shift points on the transmission. Let us know how it goes. I have not read
many posts on interfacing with the ECUs.
Good luck

Subject: Have I found the ultimate EV discussion list?
If it is ok with you guy I am going to put this up large in the garage "*BE*

I don't think that the CVs or the drive shafts are the weak point in FWD
trans, often it is internal gear teeth, such as ring, pinion or the shift
gears. It is quite possible to adapt the shafts directly to the motor, but
unfortunately the torque curve of the motors would require some sort of gear
reduction (you would be going around 140mph when the motor was spinning
2000RPM!). There may not be enough torque to go up a hill of any magnitude.

Subject: FWD direct drive "idea"
Maybe not a new idea, but this is the first time I've thought about this.
To me, the bane of FWD's is their transmissions power handling capability.
What if the stock motor and trans was removed and either a motor with one or
two shafts was installed and the CV Shafts were adapted directly to the
motor? It looks like it would be able to be connected easily?
http://www.tciauto.com/sport_compact.htm
If so, ANY FWD ever made could be used... A a direct drive 13" in a Neon,
Focus, Civic...?
---
Why can't those CV Shafts take more power? What specifically is the weak
link in them? They look like the same size and material regular rear wheel
drive axles are made from and they take absurd power levels and are like 2'
long each!

What would be an ideal FWD car to make an impressively fast performance car
out of be?

Dear Moderator,
Help! I ask for a daily digest and am getting 60 - 100
individual emails per day. It is swamping my brain
trying to pick them out from the spam. Please make it
a daily digest so that I have one email and can scan
through it more quickly.
Sincerely,
Fred Huff

Hello,
You would have to use two motors (one for each wheel) or have some type of
differential. Otherwise tight corners would be a problem.

<snip> Does anyone know if the GE EV-1 SCR controllers can be easily
setup to run on 72 volts? It would seem to me, a small motor from say
some sort of industrial vehicle, combined with an SCR controller, 72
volts worth of T-105 golf cart batteries, and a 36 Volt golf cart
charger rewired for 72 volts would make the basis for a very effective
and fairly capable EV on a very tight budget.
I have a 72V permutation of the EV-1. If anyone finds a 48V one, I may
be able to help 'spot the difference' to convert it to 72V. My one came
from an airport conveyor truck (after I had bought my Zilla).

As stated before I have three EV-1 controllers (36/48 volts) If anybody
is interested e-mail off list.

For street mode, I could just have 1 CV shaft installed(either side).
For drag race mode, I could install the other side...

If you are using Outlook Express, check how to create email message rules in
Help. You can sort messages into different folders. You can have a folder for
EVList, and the other email groups you belong to. That way the spam is more
evident in your inbox.
