How would a drag race between White Zombie and the Tesla turn out? I
imagine WZ would take it on launch up to and through 60 mph. I then
imagine I'd hear the whine of a high revving AC motor coming past me at
around 70 mph, then I think it would be all taillights for me to look
at! My guess, is that the Tesla could run an 11.8 or so ET @ 115 mph. Of
course, if we can solve the reoccurring high speed vibration thing,
White Zombie would probably dip into the high eleven second region.
Maybe I should challenge them to a grudge match race at PIR next month?
I wouldn't mind getting beat by the future :-)

I'd love to see that!

I actually think the opposite would happen. To quote their site:

==>
[From Frequently Asked Questions]
Why does the Tesla Roadster have a two-speed transmission?

The Tesla Roadster has a two-speed transmission to maximize
acceleration, while also allowing a reasonably high top speed. First
gear gets you from zero to sixty in about 4 seconds, while second gear
takes you to above 130 mph.

The gearing of the Tesla Roadster works together with the shifter and
the Power Electronics Module to provide familiar driving behavior.
First gear has strong "regenerative braking" that recharges the
battery during deceleration and feels like engine braking in low gear
on other sports cars. Second gear has less regenerative braking, and
feels like 3rd or 4th gear on other sports cars. The Tesla Roadster
needs only two gears because the motor delivers high torque over a
much wider range of rpm's than any gasoline engine. No reverse gear is
needed; the motor runs backwards for reversing.

If you do not feel like shifting, you can drive entirely in second
gear: acceleration even in second gear is remarkably fast.

[From Engineering / How It Works]
Transmission

Inside the box, our transmission couples the simplicity and efficiency
of a manual with the smarts and sophistication of an automatic. The
Tesla Roadster has only two forward gears and either one will work for
most of your driving. Unlike a manual transmission, the car will not
stall if you have it in the wrong gear. Plus it puts you in control of
the shifting to fine-tune your driving experience or to achieve the
upper limits of acceleration and top speed. And because there is no
clutch, you can quickly and easily start from a stop or shift gears on
the freeway.

[From Technical Specs]
Max power: 185kW (248hp)
<==

So, my guess is, the Tesla would beat you off the line, not because it
has more power but because AC Propulsion has very carefully designed
their controller to provide max acceleration right up to tire
adhesiveness. (This is why a tZero makes weird "chirp" sounds when it
takes off; the tires are turning at very slightly higher speed than
the car, and the tires occasionally slip just slightly) (Yes, the
controller is not actually an ACP controller, but Tesla licensed some
ACP patents, and I assume it's very similar) It reminds me of that
grand glorious day about 5 years ago, when I test-drove a tZero, it
was unbelievable at low speed, but out on the highway, at 70 or 80mph,
it didn't feel all that different from my 6-cylinder BMW Z-3.

Anyway, I bet that, once the Tesla gets to the point where its max
power of 185kW is the limiter, instead of tire adhesion, that's where
WZ starts having the edge.

Like I say: I'd love to see it!

Hi Rush,

It indeed is shifted into 2nd and shifter removed - the truck
has the "automatic" setup with a stick on the steering column
for P-R-N-D-[D] although my conversion does not use the [D]
and the only thing this stick does is to throw a parking pawl
in the gearbox at P and throw switches for the controller in
all gears, there is no connection to the gear selector.
I expect that the gearbox control (lever) is fixed, so it cannot
accidentally leave the 2nd gear.
I have never inspected the gearbox up close (yet) as I have
had no trouble with the driveline, though somebody mentioned
a yearly lube of part of the driveshaft - I'd like to know
what/where to lube so it stays functioning for many years to
come, ALSO because it not only drives but also brakes the car
for the most part, I prefer to reserve the mechanical brakes for
the emergencies only and regen what I can if I need to slow down.

FYI: the gearbox (2nd) plus differential provide almost 1:10
RPM reduction and the tires give 768 rotations per mile
http://evalbum.com/694
so the motor-RPM-to-vehicle speed conversion is close to
1000 RPM per 8 MPH.

Cor,

When you say 'locked in 2nd', do you just mean that it is shifted into 2nd
and the gear shift is disconnected so that it cannot be shifted? Or is it a
more mechanical type of locking?

The photo galleries show at least 10 or so EVs participating,
the text mentions none of them, unfortunately.
There are real geeky prototype cars, like the Zooop, but also
many seemingly production-ready EVs.

--- Begin Message --- One thing to consider is the voltage your running , if its a low voltage car then you will have to shift more . A EV that would go 45mph in 2nd with a 120v pack will have no problem doing 60 mph with a 240 pack . As for the shifting time without the clutch and without something to slow the motor down , like a A/C compressor, power steering pump or alternator on the tail shaft the shifting time is going to be more like 10 seconds if the motor rpm is up there. I just had somebody order a 156v 2k zilla and there reasoning had made me think a little. They are going with 26 orbitals in two strings , so a low voltage set up :-) . This controller is just a little more that the 300 1k but they are thinking , that having the 2000 amp up to 156v is going to be better as they'll be able to start in a higher gear , like 3 ( 9 " net gain hold on to your hat ) and with the 2 strings the voltage sag will be less. They're also thinking that the two strings in parallel will stay in balance better that on long 300v string.

how long does it take to shift. I ask because I have an S-15 86 pickup that has been electric all it's life. Recently I lost hte clutch master cylinder and have been driving without the clutch a little but in heavy traffic I really can't shift from 2-3 where I need to because it takes too long. It feels like _Forever!_ but it probably is only 3-4 seconds.. Which when going 0-50 is well forever.

Thanks Tom,

I would think that might be hard to center-up & eliminate
vibration. Do you notice any vibration, or is there some way that the
adaptor centers to the clutch plate?

Craig,

The one that ev america made for me was to use my old clutch disc with
the
facings removed and bolted to an adator to a hub on the motor. Uses the

orginal hub in the disc to fit on the input shaft of the transmission.

Works great for me.

Hello to all EV enthusiasts in Florida!

Chelsea Sexton will be joining us for the Florida
gala premiere of Sony
Pictures Classics' film "Who Killed the Electric
Car?" in Boca Raton on
Saturday evening, July 29 at:

Regal Shadowood 16 Cinemas
9889 West Glades Rd.
Boca Raton, FL 33434
tel: 800-326-3264

The theater is in the shopping center on the
northeast corner of Glades Rd.
and Rte. 441 (State Rte. 7) in West Boca.

The Florida Electric Auto Association
(www.floridaeaa.org) will be
displaying the following four EVs in the pedestrian
courtyard immediately in
front of the theater entrance:

1) Matt Graham's famous "Joule Injected" electric
Nissan 240SX, which is
only the third full-bodied electric car in
history to exceed 100mph in
    the quarter-mile drag race,

2) a brand new, stunning, electric Lamborghini
Diablo,

3) an equally exciting electric Porsche 959,

4) a Toyota RAV4-EV.

The EV exhibition in front of the theater will run
from 5pm to 7pm, where we
will be handing out the very nicely done tri-fold
flyers and 4x6 "Not Dead
Yet" cards produced by Plug-in America
(www.pluginamerica.com).

The movie will start sometime between 7:00pm and
7:20pm, to be determined by
Sony Pictures in the next few days. You should be
at the theater no later
than 7:00pm.

Chelsea Sexton will conduct a Question & Answer
session in the theater
immediately after the film, which will then be
followed by a reception for
her with moviegoers, the media, and public officials
at a nearby venue to be
announced during the Q&A session.

Chelsea will be available here in South Florida all
day Friday, July 28 for
media interviews, which Sony Pictures, their South
Florida publicist, and we
in the Florida EAA are working on lining up for her.
 If you have any media
contacts in Florida who you think might be
interested in interviewing
Chelsea, could you please contact me off-list at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] TV,
radio, and print journalists who might have
potential interest can view the
movie's trailer at:
www.sonyclassics.com/whokilledtheelectriccar.

All EV enthusiasts in Florida as well as those who
are just curious and
want to learn more about EVs are cordially invited
to join Chelsea and the
rest of us for this gala premiere of "Who Killed the
Electric Car?". If you
are coming from Central Florida, North Florida, or
the Gulf Coast and need
accommodations for Saturday night, I live 9 miles
from the theater and
have 6 extra beds to spare, although I think one of
them may already be
spoken for by Steve Clunn, not sure yet. You would
have to be responsible
for your own transportation and meals, although
you're welcome to rummage
through my fridge for anything that you think might
be remotely edible.
Contact me off-list if you're coming long-distance
and have such a need for
accommodations.

We anticipate a packed house, so you might want to
think about buying your
tickets early, especially if you are coming from
farther away.

See you all next Saturday evening, July 29!

Actually, I fear this would be much harder to do than you might
expect. A sedan would likely be much less slippery and also heavier,
than the Tesla vehicle. Cutting the pack in half AND adding weight
and air resistance would likely cut the range down to 100mi or less
while simultaneously cutting acceleration by more than half.

As for pricing, I expect that $15k is about what the half-pack would
currently cost, so even having stripped the car, you'd be hard pressed
to build a $20k car.

Then consider the 500 cycles on the batteries, and the notion that
you'd be paying $15k every 50,000 miles....

My recollection is that they're hoping for a $50k vehicle for 2008,
and they believe that battery tech will advance to the point that
that will be possible. I think we've got a long road to climb to
get to $20k (and that might be too hard a climb, really -- both my
vehicles were under $20k, but it's becoming mighty hard to find
cars in that pricepoint).

I hope the eaasv members grill Tesla about batteries. They need to
concern themselves with cycle and calendar life and cost, and I hope
they are forging partnerships with some of the newer cell
technologies (that have better lifecycle and calendar lifespans),
as often the pricing can head "down" to $500/kwh with the appropriate
volume. Sadly, for your $20k pricepoint, you'll need pricing
levels much lower than even that....

Still, better calendar/cycle life could ease the (what I assume is)
~$5k per year battery replacement cost on the current vehicle.

> I wouldn't mind getting beat by the future :-)

I expect you'd win. I believe the 0-100 time is 11s, and you are
almost certainly faster off the line. I doubt they'd catch you.

I'm less sure of ProEV's chances -- the Elise is a pretty nimble
car, and while the Tesla is heavier, it's center of gravity is
reportedly lower....

the closest thing to MLBN in their computer system...eventually someone at

10,000 cars that get 100mpg or better.

Let a thousand flowers bloom indeed!

ps The guy who designed the winning spaceship for the Ansari X Prize,
Burt Rutan, and the director of the automotive X Prize, Mark
Goodstein, have something in common: they were both present at the
Tesla unveiling!

White Zombie out of his comparison, too.

I do think he's been around GP however, and
he might have also gone for a ride in it. The instantaneous lunge from
the butt loads of torque coming from twin 8s and a single 9 with 40
powerful Exide Orbitals making the juice in Gone Postal, has gotta feel
like a freight train has slammed into your backside! Sob....though I've
been in, under, and all around GP, I've never had a ride :-(

Thanks to both John and Roderick, I believe that I am the only person who has driven both GP and the Zombie in their current configurations and thought I might comment on the differences.

First, I think that GP is like double the weight of the Zombie, it is sorta like driving a lead brick :^D

IIRC, it is also like double the available horsepower of the Zombie with the dual strings of 20 Orbitals (40 total) and the 2 Zilla 2Ks and the 3 motors it pulls very hard just like the Zombie.

With the handling issues resolved, I bet it would run well into the 12s. I have seen Roderick lift 1/3 of the way down the track, re-apply throttle, and still make a 98 mph run.

GP is quite a ride when the large analog ammeters are showing 1000+ battery amps being pulled out of the pack :^D

OTOH, the Zombie launches arrow-straight and never tends to suddenly lurch one way or another when the front tires break traction (cuz unlike GP, the front end is not powered on the Zombie. OK, I'm baiting Roderick just for fun here :^D ). But then the Zombie can't do a four-wheel burnout like GP either.

The power-to-weight ratios of both vehicles seem very similar to me.

A big plus is being able to drive either of these serious race vehicles sanely and silently as a grocery-getter.

How would a drag race between White Zombie and the Tesla turn out?
(snip)
Maybe I should challenge them to a grudge match race at PIR next month?
I wouldn't mind getting beat by the future :-)

Some wilde biker dude mentioned that Tesla Motors would not be competing with the prototypes and would be waiting until the actual production models are available to race with.

wrote me back, from the EV-1 Fanclub site. I was flattered that he would

if he were to come down to Earth and design a car as efficient as his

Our state's largest circulation paper ran an article
on EVs today. Thanks to Brian Avery (I'm gathering)
and others in OEVA, it was a pretty thorough effort,
discussing Toyota's PHEV Prius, as well as 3rd party
conversions.
Unfortunately, I think we'll take some crud from
Brian's range, listed in the article as 10 mi., while
the majority of us do 4x that or better. They also
listed recharge time as 10-12 hrs., while some of us
use 220V lines to do it faster (thanks, PFC-20!). So I
did write in regarding insuring them, range of the
average commutes, etc. At least it's a start!

It would be nice to see a race that was not just straight line acceleration.
Comparing the Tesla to a drag car in a straight line acceleration is
somewhat biased.

Something that can test acceleration, cornering and range...

I'd love to see that!

I actually think the opposite would happen. To quote their site:

==>
[From Frequently Asked Questions]
Why does the Tesla Roadster have a two-speed transmission?

The Tesla Roadster has a two-speed transmission to maximize acceleration,
while also allowing a reasonably high top speed. First gear gets you from
zero to sixty in about 4 seconds, while second gear takes you to above 130
mph.

The gearing of the Tesla Roadster works together with the shifter and the
Power Electronics Module to provide familiar driving behavior.
First gear has strong "regenerative braking" that recharges the battery
during deceleration and feels like engine braking in low gear on other
sports cars. Second gear has less regenerative braking, and feels like 3rd
or 4th gear on other sports cars. The Tesla Roadster needs only two gears
because the motor delivers high torque over a much wider range of rpm's than
any gasoline engine. No reverse gear is needed; the motor runs backwards for
reversing.

If you do not feel like shifting, you can drive entirely in second
gear: acceleration even in second gear is remarkably fast.

[From Engineering / How It Works]
Transmission

Inside the box, our transmission couples the simplicity and efficiency of a
manual with the smarts and sophistication of an automatic. The Tesla
Roadster has only two forward gears and either one will work for most of
your driving. Unlike a manual transmission, the car will not stall if you
have it in the wrong gear. Plus it puts you in control of the shifting to
fine-tune your driving experience or to achieve the upper limits of
acceleration and top speed. And because there is no clutch, you can quickly
and easily start from a stop or shift gears on the freeway.

[From Technical Specs]
Max power: 185kW (248hp)
<==

So, my guess is, the Tesla would beat you off the line, not because it has
more power but because AC Propulsion has very carefully designed their
controller to provide max acceleration right up to tire adhesiveness. (This
is why a tZero makes weird "chirp" sounds when it takes off; the tires are
turning at very slightly higher speed than the car, and the tires
occasionally slip just slightly) (Yes, the controller is not actually an
ACP controller, but Tesla licensed some ACP patents, and I assume it's very
similar) It reminds me of that grand glorious day about 5 years ago, when I
test-drove a tZero, it was unbelievable at low speed, but out on the
highway, at 70 or 80mph, it didn't feel all that different from my
6-cylinder BMW Z-3.

Anyway, I bet that, once the Tesla gets to the point where its max power of
185kW is the limiter, instead of tire adhesion, that's where WZ starts
having the edge.

Like I say: I'd love to see it!

jorg
