Something I learned (the hard way) is that often when the gas gage reads E that 
you are at or near the point where the fuel pump is no longer being cooled well 
by being immersed in the fuel. This leaves you vulnerable to burning out the 
pump and being stranded. Very similar effect to running your batteries too low. 
There is something to be said for E having a fairly good reserve but also 
keeping that reserve as emergency supply not relying on it.
