Well, i try to do as you say. I use eco all the time, rarely go over 4
circles on accel, usually two or three.
I dont know what area you're in but i find with lots of starts and stops
regen is increasingly important. If i go on hwy 99 at a steady speed i can
get her about 3.5 miles/kwh according to the gage under the speedo. But on
other streets with stops every block or so plus some 20% grades, that drops
to about 1.5 or at best 1.9.
What it appears is that regen barely kicks in, and that is corraborated by
brake wear. Cant remember the mm right now but it was approx the same as
for a gas car. I use the brakes as lightly as i can. Yet the dealer says
the regen is fine. Go figure.

Hi Peri,
I didn't contact him, he called me as a courtesy for my dealer. It was
during that call that I pinned him down a bit on the battery settings.
It was over a year ago, and I am having difficulty locating the contact
info that I had for him.
As for your regen, are you in the eco mode? I also find that the regen is
most noticeable after the top 2 bars have been used. I also work hard to
keep the majority of my operations in the first 2 circles of the power use
gauge, using the 5th and above dramatically reduces the range. Another
useful habit to maximize range, is to gently squeeze the throttle when
starting from a stop, rather than mashing it. Sudden inrush currents create
heat at the controller, and the battery (excess heat and cold are the enemy
of this technology). I find that I get my best range in June and July
around here (in the Seattle area), 100-125 miles, if I am careful (even
with the hills).

That's very good. So they appear to be doing their best in this regard

How did you get hold of an engineer? I think my regen isn't performing
properly, though the dealer assures me it is, as i only get 45-50 miles on
a full charge in city driving. I would really like someone who knows to
tell me how to verify this or better, change some params for more regen.

Actually, if you select the 80% option, you will find that you would be
charging to 80% of 80%. Confusing, I know, but when I asked the engineer
about this and the conflicting instructions in the owner's manual, he
conceded that the engineers were overruled by the lawyers, on the side of
caution, as the batteries were largely an unknown quantity. This despite a
lengthy testing process. He agreed that charging the batteries to 70% on a
regular basis would cause no harm, but would not give as much satisfaction
with range either. He also, agreed that their testing also showed that
there was a reasonable argument for allowing owners to charge to an actual
90%, but that the warranty (legal) department would not allow this option,
hence the 80%/20% compromise.

First i've heard of 80-20 for the leaf. It does have a charge time setup

like the same thing. Peri

Interesting idea. I recall the early VWs (and Porsches) with the "reserve
function".
According to one Nissan engineer that I spoke with in 2011, the Leaf is
designed to not charge above 80% nor discharge below 20%, which
corresponds
to the on on-board display's full and empty. (this corresponds with the
guidelines of most Lithium manufacturers, and therefore makes a lot of
sense, as a method to preserve the batteries). It has been my experience
with electric vehicles that if you pull out of traffic and wait 20
minutes
or so, that you can restart the vehicle and limp to an outlet somewhere.
(
I have yet to need to do this with our Leaf, as the instrumentation has
always erred on the side of more range rather than less. My home built
projects never seemed to have the desired accuracy.

My father had one of those VWs, a 1961, with no gas gauge and a reserve
lever on the firewall. I think something similar is an outstanding idea
for
an EV. It shouldn't be at all tough for a manufacturer to implement -
just
program it into the BMS.
