Methanol is typically synthesized via steam reformation of natgas. So hydrogen 
from methanol is just an intermediate step from natgas.

It is possible to use biological processes to make methanol, but I don't 
believe it is widely done, as it would be very much more expensive than using 
natgas as a feedstock.
