Unless my remembery is playing tricks on me, MUNI in the San Francisco Bay Area 
still uses both on major surface street routes -- and I'm pretty sure the 
system dates back to that same era. This isn't a novelty tourist attraction 
like the famous cable cars, but the regular public transit system.

...and, of course, BART is fully electrified with a third rail....
