IMO, the main reason that current EVSEs (the old inductive chargers too) 
were designed that way was to make them resemble gasoline pumps.

Similarly, the annoying and totally unnecessary brake-off creep was built 
into many (most?) EVs for the same reason - so they act like "normal" ICEVs 
with automatic transmissions.  People are afraid of change, so they hobble 
anything new to make it resemble the old.
