And for ICEVs too. A fast-accelerating vehicle has the potential to get you out of a tough situation in a hurry, but it can also get an inexperienced or impared driver in a lot of trouble fast. I don't know for sure, but I think that the horsepower and fast acceleration race is mostly a US phenomenon. It's been going on there as long as I can remember, certainly since I was in high school, back when Mustang GTs and GTOs and Hemi Chargers were tearing up the asphalt. I don't see it much in Europe. There are exotic supercars on offer, but I hardly ever see them except at car shows, and very very rarely in big cities. Out here in the provinces where I live, nobody has that kind of money. And it does take money. Gas is expensive here, $6-8 per gallon, and France at least has a malus tax on the purchase of high-CO2-emitting vehicles that ranges up to 60,000 euros (US$70,000+). Now and then I see sporty versions of superminis, but not all that often. Normal cars, both EV and ICEV, emphasize comfort and efficiency over speed and acceleration. A 0-60 time of 7 seconds is considered fast. Your typical car is more like 9-12 seconds. As for efficiency, even the big ICE (these days almost always stop-start mild hybrid or PHEV) SUVs get 40-50mpg, small cars upwards of 55-65mpg. Just different cultures, I guess.
