You CAN re-program them at home, if you buy the tool the tire shop uses (which does plug into the OBDII port). They are not horribly expensive ($100-$200) but if you only plan to do it once it is probably cheaper to pay a tire shop to do it for you. [I mean, if you are already there for them to put the TMPS sensors in.....]
