the sleepycat folks have a *very* poor track record about backwards
compatibility...

it should be gnome-addressbook, not evolution's one, IMO.

I should be able to enjoy the addressbook from any gnome program
without the need to install or use evolution.
it should be packaged separately as gnome-addressbook
(or something like that)

(note that this is a minor and very different space problem than the
final format of the addressbook)
