Well, there are people here that use VNC on daily bases. It is slower,
but I don't think it is that bad. Try it. Especially if you use it on
only one application such as Evolution. I am not saying you run VNC/X
over some great distance, but...

In our company we have couple general purpose Linux computers that are
used by some people on inferior operating systems with VNC. They use it
to run emacs, xterm, 3D visualization software...

So, I guess the answers for our questions are:
