Legato can do a backup at the speed of the media if you use multiplexing, in other words if you backup multiple servers at once onto the same tape. This way data is written onto the tape very fast. However I question the speed of the restore process - if you need to restore just one server, the stream of data on tape will have to be de-muxed. The guys from CommVault told me that this would result in a lot of back-and-forth tape rewind operations. The CommVault guys of course were promoting their way of doing things (Galaxy), which according to them is more restore friendly than anything else out there.
