You can control the amount of parallelism in Legato (at a couple of different levels). And it is correct that more parallelism speeds up backups (with modern, fast tape drives, anyway). Parallelism does lengthen restore times. If you are backing up 4 save-sets in parallel, and you want to restore one of those save-sets, it takes 4 times longer because 3/4 of the data read from the tape belongs to the 3 save-sets you aren't interested in[1]. It is a trade-off between backup time and restore time. However, "de-muxing" the data stream does not shoe-shine the drives. Legato simply starts streaming the data off the drive and discards any unneeded data chunks.
