Here's where it will loop:

Parent is taking their child to DisneyWorld for a week. Parent sends you an
e-mail to inform you that child will be blissfully enjoying the house of the
mouse and if any homework assignments could be held for them until their
return. Your autoresponder replies to the parent and says "Thank you for your
e-mail....blah blah."

The parent has configured Outlook using the Rules Wizard, because they don't
use an Exchange Server, to automatically reply to every message received with a
response that says "Thanks for e-mailing us! We're in Orlando spending $6 for
a small popcorn while our kid gets their picture taken with Goofy."

Your system receives that message and, true to form, autoreplies with "Thank
you for your e-mail....blah blah." And then their autoresponder replies with
"Thank you for e-mailing us! We're in Orlando..."

Rinse. Repeat.

Then it's just a question of whose mail store will crash first - yours or
theirs. At this point you're hoping they're using Outlook 2000 so that their
PST file will crash somewhere around 2GB and stop this insipid game of e-mail
tennis. Things will get much more interesting if they have a new Outlook 2003
Unicode PST file...

Mmmmm, mail loops good, but I think you misunderstood. If a parent from
outside school sends an email to this distribution group that has 5 of my
administrative staff in it, the administrative staff receive the email that the
parent sent and the server (no open client required) automatically sends a
reply to the parent saying "Thank you for your email.....blah blah". Why would
that loop? This is something MS explains how to do, it just doesn't work.

I can promise that there is no gold star associated with that accomplishment.

Maybe they've always wanted to see an Information Store hit the store limit and
crash?

OMG. This is asking for a mail loop. Why on earth would they want to do this?

Ex2k3, Outlook 2003 latest patches.

We're trying to set up a distribution list that each time an email is received
by that list, the server sends an automatic response ("Thank
you") to the original sender. I'm following the troubleshooting tips using MS
Q325469 and the members get emails sent but no automatic reply is sent to the
original sender. I've checked that out-of-office replies are enabled.
Is anyone doing this and have it working? We don't want to use the template
method as that requires a specific client to have Outlook open.

Rick
