I'm going to go out on a limb here and say this can be done and still be
able to minimize the chance of crashing the store.  Instead on delivering
the messages to a DL, have them delivered to one mailbox that has your
auto-response rule.  Set up a very low mailbox size limit on that mailbox
(<50MB).  Give permission to your DL members to that mailbox.  While this
doesn't stop the possibility of a mail loop, it will prevent killing the
store in the event that a mail loop starts (and it will).

It's not a perfect solution, but it does the job while minimizing the risks.
I have had a set up like this for about 3 years and it works fine.  I've had
2 mail loops and both where easy to stop.

Mmmmm, mail loops good, but I think you misunderstood.  If a parent from
outside school sends an email to this distribution group that has 5 of my
administrative staff in it, the administrative staff receive the email that
the parent sent and the server (no open client required) automatically sends
a reply to the parent saying "Thank you for your email.....blah blah".  Why
would that loop?  This is something MS explains how to do, it just doesn't
work.

Ex2k3, Outlook 2003 latest patches.

We're trying to set up a distribution list that each time an email is
received by that list, the server sends an automatic response ("Thank
you") to the original sender.  I'm following the troubleshooting tips using
MS Q325469 and the members get emails sent but no automatic reply is sent to
the original sender.  I've checked that out-of-office replies are enabled.
Is anyone doing this and have it working?  We don't want to use the template
method as that requires a specific client to have Outlook open.
