I'm going to go out on a limb here and say this can be done and still be able to minimize the chance of crashing the store. Instead on delivering the messages to a DL, have them delivered to one mailbox that has your auto-response rule. Set up a very low mailbox size limit on that mailbox (<50MB). Give permission to your DL members to that mailbox. While this doesn't stop the possibility of a mail loop, it will prevent killing the store in the event that a mail loop starts (and it will).
It's not a perfect solution, but it does the job while minimizing the risks. I have had a set up like this for about 3 years and it works fine. I've had 2 mail loops and both where easy to stop.
