We use native Exchange 2003 clustering (on Windows 2003 EE servers) in
combination with an EMC SAN. A basic SAN will give you immediate
failover if there is a hardware problem with one server. In addition,
we have 2 SAN disk arrays that are mirrored using EMC's MirrorView. If
we lost the building, we could promote the data (LUNs) on the remote
side to primary and bring up the server there in a matter of minutes.
The way we have that setup is one server and one disk array at our
primary site and one server and one disk array (mirrored, no access
during normal business conditions) at our remote location. Mirrorview
commits the write on both disk arrays before the server gets a write
success notification, so the data is mirrored in realtime. This is not
an inexpensive solution, and it does require a high speed connection
between sites (fiber). It works very well for us.

Subject: High availability solutions

Management wants to give our clients a ballpark figure for a high
availability solution for our Exchange servers. I'm thinking some kind
of failover to another system in another building, maybe even another
city! I doubt anybody will have the $$ to pay for such a solution, but
they're asking for it, so I need to at least give them some choices.

A simple Google search turns up dozens of possibilities. What do you
folks use, and are you satisfied with your solution?

Thanks in advance, knowledgeable colleagues.
